About The Emergency Planning Committee
The Tompkins County Emergency Planning Committee was established by resolution of the Tompkins County Legislature in 2000. Its mission is to facilitate the planning process for emergency management of disaster responses and to assist with operations during times of local emergencies.
This Committee assists the Department of Emergency Response with the development and maintenance of Tompkins County Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan. Representatives from the emergency response community, human services, educational institutions, County and municipal governments, law enforcement, public works and public health comprise official membership; however, on an ongoing basis, a much larger and more diverse team of individuals and local agencies participate in support of the County’s emergency management programs.
The Tompkins County Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan outlines
local strategies for the
management of:
- Preparedness
- Mitigation
- Response
- Recovery
This plan provides for an orderly means to prevent or minimize (mitigation strategies), prepare for, respond to and recover from emergencies and disasters that threaten life, property and the environment within Tompkins County boundaries. The plan describes the basic strategies, assumptions and mechanisms through which agencies in Tompkins County will mobilize resources and conduct activities to guide and support local emergency management efforts through response and recovery. Focus on preparedness, both at the individual and citizen level, as well as organizational and governmental levels is central to the plan’s development.
The Tompkins County Emergency Planning Committee meets on the third
Tuesday of each month at the Emergency Response Building at 92 Brown
Road.
